Billy Walters has revealed his desire to return the games biggest stage and win another premiership with the Brisbane Broncos after the utility injured his ACL in the sides 2025 qualifying final and missed the big dance.
“I’d like to get back to here, but wearing a jersey this time… not a polo shirt,” he said.
Walters also revealed he played for 15 minutes on the knee without knowing the full extent of the injury, saying the adrenaline of the game masked the pain of the second ACL injury in his career.
"I was lucky enough I could run on it, and I was lucky that Canberra didn't really exploit me in defence," he said.
“After I cooled down a bit I was a bit nervous, but I still wasn’t thinking it was my ACL.
“It was pretty heart breaking but that’s the way it goes sometimes.”
With surgery more than four months behind him, Walters stepped out onto Red Hill field to complete his first run since the injury last week.
The squad has been staying around me and keeping positive.
“It’s a pretty long process, but I’ve got Braithen Scott with me, so we just bounce off each other and keep each other positive. It feels a bit weird, you’ve got to learn to run again.
“I have seen some clips of me running and I can tell that it’s my first run back, but pain wise it’s pretty good."
Not expected to return until the second half of the season, Walters will have to do what he can to remain positive and do his part for the team.
“Rehab has gone pretty quick to be honest, but it was a little bit hard watching the boys," he continued.
“I’ve just got to do what I’ve got to do to try and get on back on the field and I can’t wait.”
