Manly Cracks Widen as the ARL Commission Seizes New Powers

The boys dive into a turbulent week for rugby league. From the "physics" confusing players at Brookvale to a controversial power grab by the ARL Commission, the game is facing internal friction just as State of Origin reaches its fever pitch.

Pressure builds at Brookvale

Manly's season is teetering on the edge following a lackluster performance against the Titans. Reports have emerged that coach Anthony Seibold held brief, intense individual meetings with players, handing out critiques that have reportedly not been well received.

"The performances are getting less and less inspiring," Kent noted, pointing out that the club has reacted internally to the slump. "Seibold has called players in; he’s tried to basically gauge what they think is wrong. The worry is that the meetings came out straight away. Whenever there are problems at a club, there are always leaks."

The hosts discussed the complexity of Seibold's coaching style, which some players reportedly find difficult to digest. "The winging coming from the players is that it is too complicated. There’s just too much physics up on the board. They get confused with the message and they just don’t have the capacity to learn what he’s trying to teach them."

The ARL Commission's "mind-boggling" power grab

The most significant off-field story involves a new directive from the ARL Commission, which has reportedly informed clubs it will now have the power to override the Match Review Committee (MRC) and impose harsher penalties on its own volition.

Kent was scathing of the move, questioning the footballing credentials of the commissioners to make such specific on-field rulings. "I don’t trust the commission to get it right. I don’t think there’s enough football on that commission. You’ve got to know footy to know footy."

He suggested that if the current system is failing, the solution is to fix the committee, not bypass it. "If it’s not working at match review committee level, fix the match review committee. You don’t come in as a committee that doesn’t understand the specialized areas. Just because you like something and you’re familiar with it doesn’t mean you understand it enough to run it."

The "Soul of Origin" issues a warning

Turning to State of Origin, the legendary Chris ‘Choppy’ Close has issued a stern warning to the Queensland Maroons. Close, described by Kent as the "soul of Origin," suggested that the Maroons have drifted into a "club-land" mentality that could cost them dearly.

"Choppy has cut through all the rubbish," Kent said. "He’s basically said to Queensland that if you don’t step up to Origin level, then we won’t beat New South Wales for another hundred years."

The hosts observed that Queensland’s preparation has appeared overly clinical and "overbearingly boring," lacking the raw emotion traditionally associated with the Maroons. "They went out and they tried to finesse their way to victory in game one, which is the one thing you can’t do in Origin."

A masterclass in silence from Wayne Bennett

In a lighter but no less significant moment, the hosts praised Wayne Bennett’s coaching "genius" during the recent lightning delay in the South Sydney versus Canterbury match. While the players sat in the dressing room for nearly half an hour, Bennett famously refused to enter.

"He left the players sit there and ponder by themselves," Kent explained, drawing parallels to the legendary Jack Gibson. "Jack’s response was always: they got themselves in the situation, they can get themselves out. It made the players take the responsibility rather than just the typical coach coming in and knocking over chairs."

Kent lauded Bennett’s self-control, noting that sometimes the best information a coach can give is none at all. "That was a genius stroke from Bennett. It will keep him in good stead for the rest of the season.”
