Ronnie Palmer on a lifetime of grit and gratitude

Rugby league legend Ronnie Palmer sat down with Chimes to recount his extraordinary journey from a Balmain junior to becoming the most iconic strength and conditioning coach in the game's history.
The Art of Resilience
After being moved on from the Wests Tigers at the end of 2023, Palmer opened up about the sense of loss that comes with leaving the game after five decades. To combat the downtime, he relies on a strict morning routine of physical activity and affirmations—telling himself he is strong, powerful, and a winner—to maintain the positive energy that became his trademark on the sidelines.
From the Frontlines of the Battlefield
As a long-time trainer, Palmer was often the first responder to some of the game's most horrific injuries. He vividly recalled the moment Phil Clarke broke his neck in North Queensland, noting the immense pressure of managing a player who was just one wrong move away from permanent paralysis. Palmer’s role often transcended fitness; he acted as a co-coach, trainer, and confidant, frequently using his position on the field to gauge the "soul" of the players in the heat of battle.
The Evolution of the Cult Hero
Known for his signature short shorts and the moniker "Ronnie Palmer the Balmain Charmer," he became a fixture of NRL broadcasts. He admitted to being on the field for nearly half the game during the unlimited interchange era, often acting as a tactical conduit for coaches like Phil Gould. Despite the occasional fines from officials and heckling from fans, Palmer remains a beloved figure for his authenticity and his "eye contact" approach to leadership and human connection.
Four Pillars of a Healthy Life
Drawing on his background as a physical education teacher and his Master’s degree in Human Movement, Palmer shared his four pillars for longevity: daily movement, a sensible diet, quality sleep through deep breathing, and, most importantly, happiness. He argued that stress is the greatest silent killer in modern society and that maintaining a fulfilling, joyful life is the best medicine for the human body.
