Wayne Bennett’s Final Chapter and the Expansion of the Angels

It was a day for grand announcements and internal shocks as we broke down the latest movements in the NRL on this latest episode of Kenty Blitz. From the tropical boardrooms of Port Moresby to the coaching hot seat at Brookvale, the landscape of the competition is being redrawn by both new franchises and bold coaching gambles.

The Supercoach’s Last Stand

The biggest news of the week surrounds Wayne Bennett. Despite the NRL’s efforts to lure the master coach into leading the new Papua New Guinea franchise, Kenty revealed that Bennett has politely declined. Instead, it appears the legendary coach has decided that his upcoming stint with the South Sydney Rabbitohs will be his final act in the coaching box.

"I’ve made a few calls around the game... apparently the NRL have approached him and he’s knocked them back," Kenty shared during the show. "The indication is that this is Bennett's last coaching gig. He’s told the NRL that this is it." While he may still serve in a consultancy role for PNG, the era of Bennett as a head coach is nearing its end.

A New Board and an Angelic Identity

In Papua New Guinea, the "Power Brokers" have officially moved forward by appointing a new board for the 2028 expansion team. Led by former Canterbury chairman Ray Dib and Storm legend Marcus Bai, the board is already weighing up its identity. While nicknames are still being debated, "the Angels" — a tribute to the Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels of World War II — is gaining serious momentum.

With Bennett out of the running for the head coach role, the focus shifts to the "usual suspects." Jason Demetriou currently appears to have the inside running, but Kenty noted that the names of Sam Burgess, Brad Arthur, and Willie Peters are all likely to feature in upcoming discussions.

The Expansion Concession Debate

The entry of PNG and a second Perth team has reignited the debate over salary cap concessions. Kenty threw his weight behind the idea, arguing that starting from scratch without an existing roster is an inherent disadvantage.

"It would be a disaster for the NRL for both Perth and Papa New Guinea to come into the competition and within four or five years they've been unable to attract quality players," Kenty remarked. He suggested the league should look at the AFL’s model of insulating franchises during their early years, perhaps even allowing expansion clubs to approach non-insulated players well before the standard November 1 deadline.

Seibold’s Bold Gamble with Turbo

Back on home soil, the rugby league world was stunned by Anthony Seibold’s decision to move Tom "Turbo" Trbojevic from his traditional fullback role to centre. The player himself was reportedly shocked by the move, but Kenty sees it as a sign of a coach refusing to go down without a fight.

"I'm actually quite impressed by what Seibold's doing here. He's trying to coach his way out of his problems," Kenty said. He noted that while Trbojevic is a "pure fullback," his success at centre in the Origin arena suggests he can still roam and be effective. In a club where whispers of player dissatisfaction are growing, Kenty believes this "bold move" is exactly what Manly needs to find balance.

Mid-Season Report Cards

We wrapped up the episode by grading the bottom half of the ladder. The Gold Coast Titans received a lowly three or four out of ten, with Kenty’s advice being to "stop the noise" surrounding Des Hasler’s future. The Rabbitohs were granted a more generous six or seven, acknowledged for their resilience despite being "busted by injuries."

The Wests Tigers were told they must "toughen up defensively," while the Cowboys were critiqued for appearing "content losing games" in a manner reminiscent of the old North Sydney Bears. Whether the potential mid-season arrival of Selwyn Cobbo can provide the "circuit breaker" North Queensland desperately needs remains to be seen.
